The Legacy of Debbie Melone Hanes

Debbie Melone Hanes

Debbie Melone Hanes (’78) was a masterful communicator whose life was a testament to the transformative power of words. With an unwavering belief in the human spirit, she dedicated herself to using her communication skills to love, worship, teach, and encourage those around her.

Raised with strong spiritual values, Debbie earned her bachelor's degree in communication from Geneva College. She cherished her time at Geneva, where she experienced some of the best years of her life and formed many lifelong friendships. The College honored her with the Distinguished Service Award in 2003.

Debbie furthered her education with a master’s degree in communication from Duquesne University, which deepened her expertise and prepared her for a remarkable career in communication.

In 2004, Debbie's life took a joyful turn when she married Robert K. Hanes. Their love flourished, and in 2015, they embraced the role of guardians to their beloved niece, Bella, enriching their family life. As a wonderful mother to her bonus daughters, Tammy and Jody, and a beloved “Grandma D” to six grandchildren, she was a constant source of support and encouragement.

Debbie's professional journey was marked by an entrepreneurial spirit and creative leadership. In 1993, she co-founded Miller-Melone Communication and Design, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing companies in southwestern Pennsylvania, as recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, she excelled in public relations, marketing, advertising, writing, and web development, serving clients ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies across various industries, including healthcare and technology. Her impressive portfolio includes more than 80 communication awards, a testament to her impact in the field.

Later, Debbie ran her own successful venture, Melone Marketing Communications. She also shared her expertise as an adjunct professor at both Geneva College and Waynesburg University, passionately inspiring students to communicate with clarity and creativity.

Faith and community were constant themes in Debbie’s life. She actively participated in her church, chaperoning youth on mission trips, leading Vacation Bible Schools during summer breaks, and sharing her musical talents as a pianist and singer on worship teams.

Debbie’s intellect and curiosity fostered a sense of adventure, which led her to backpacking across Europe in her twenties. She returned to Europe many times with friends and family. She later shared her sense of wonder with Bella when she introduced her to the beauty of Paris in 2018.

Debbie Melone Hanes’ journey through life exemplifies how a Christ-centered foundation can empower individuals to navigate life’s challenges and build meaningful business and personal communications. To honor her remarkable legacy, this scholarship is established to support future students in their pursuit of communication studies, ensuring that Debbie’s spirit of faith-based service will continue to inspire generations to come.
